The photos of the beaches in South Evia are divided into four categories:

  1. the beaches of South Evia, Aegean Sea ▼ and Cape Doro area (Cape Kafirea) ▼
  2. the beaches of South Evia, the area of Paximada and the bay of Karystos ▼
  3. beaches of South Evia, South Evian Gulf ▼

The beaches in South Evia are for all tastes and the waves that everyone wants. If you don’t want a lot of waves usually the beaches in the South Evian Gulf are the best choice.

Of course, this also depends on the wind. That is, with a north wind and mainly from 5 Beaufort and above, there is a lot of waves on the Aegean beaches. If it is now blowing south or at most 3-4 Beaufort north, then the beaches of the Aegean and Cape Doro in Karystos are the best choice!

Remember that South Evia and especially the area of Marmari and Karystos are famous for their strong north winds which is one of the main reasons why the area is full of wind turbines (in 2020 when we last visited the area we saw a very large number of new units and we were told that we are still at the beginning of the installation of wind turbines in the area!).

So if you get days with south winds or weak northerly winds, don’t miss the opportunity to go to the Aegean as these periods of calm don’t last long enough in the region.

Lush slopes, the deep blue of the Aegean Sea and a beach waiting for you at the end of the route.

We didn’t say anything about the quality of the water because as you will see in the photos, all the beaches have a wonderful sea!

Beaches of South Evia, Aegean Sea and Cape Doro (Cape Kafireas)

Here we will need to make an informal distinction between those that are most directly accessible to the Marble (1 hour by boat from the port of Rafina), with the exception of the beaches in Mesochoria that are closer to Styra (45 minutes from the port of Agia Marina), and those that are closer to the side of Karystos (Cape Doro).

Agios Dimitrios Beach (Schinodavleia), South Evia-Aegean Sea
Agios Dimitrios beach, or Schinodavleia (as we learned about it in 2000 when we first visited it), South Evia-Aegean.

Although there are several beaches on the Aegean side, the largest and most popular and relatively easy to access beaches can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Specifically, these are the beaches of Agios Dimitrios (or Schinodavlia), Kalliani and Giannitsi.

Access to them is faster from the port of Marmari (30-45 minutes). Getting off the ferry follow the signs for Karystos that take you through Marmari and then for Chalkida, at the stop at the gas station in Marmari take a left, which will take you up to the intersection(exact location on Google Maps). There are signs for the beaches there.

Remember that for the beaches of Agios Dimitrios and Kalliani the route is the same (continue after the village of Paradisi with the two traditional tavernas as the road passes by the small settlement of Agios Dimitrios) while for the beach of Giannitsi follow the road after the junction but relatively soon turn left towards the village of Pothi where you will find a well-known taverna (if we remember correctly it is called ‘the barefoot’).

See photos from Potami beach, from which you have a view of Andros, the beach of Agios Dimitrios or Schinodavlia, the beach at Giannitsi and the beaches in Mesochoria such as Limnionas(location on the map), Tsakaioi and Armyrichi.

Beaches at Cape Doro (Cape Kafireas)

Now on the Karystos side, and the famous Kavodoro with its shipwrecks and stormy sea, the most famous beaches on the Aegean side are Potami and Archampoli. Both are located in the narrow sea passage between southern Evia (Kavo Doro) and the northern side of Andros.

Archampoli is accessible only from the sea or by hiking on the ancient path from the village of Thymi, while access to Potami beach is much easier, especially in recent years when the last 5 km section of the main road to the beach has been paved.

For Potami beach you will need about 45 minutes from Karystos driving on a road with several bends and fortunately few difficult parts. Fifteen minutes before you reach the beach, you will pass the “bridge of lovers” and the rare beauty of the Platanistos landscape. There dominates the large waterfall under which, in 2020 when we last visited the spot, a large natural pool (pedestal) was formed where we swam in the icy waters of the Platanistos stream that ends at Potami beach.

For the waterfall of Platanistos you will need about 30 minutes from Karystos and another 15 minutes from there to Potami beach. The waterfall is next to the road and the “bridge of lovers” so it is very easy to find.

But in Cape Doro and the southern area of Karystia, the surprises don’t stop there. There are still many, many beaches, many of which have streams that form small waterfalls with natural pools for diving and shade under the plane trees to cool off from the hot Greek sun. The two most typical beaches in this style are Dipotamos and Zacharia.

Dipotamos can also be considered a double beach where different streams end up, hence the name. We visited one of them and following the stream leading to the beach we found several pedestals ideal for diving and rinsing from the sea water.

The other beach with a stream leading to the sea is Zacharia. Beautiful natural landscape and two small streams falling on the sandy beach caressing the chiseled rocks of a still untouched area. A unique natural shower whenever you want to rinse the sea water off you. In the difficult summer hours, as in Dipotamos, you can climb a little into the stream and relax in the cool water in the shade of the plane trees.

Concluding our very short journey to Cape Doro and the mythical cape of Kafireas, we could not fail to mention the unique Archampoli with its huge beach, the ancient settlement and the obvious signs of the ancient mines abandoned during the Roman era.

Going up to the only building that exists there, the chapel of Ai Giorgis, you will see the foundations of the ancient settlement, which dates back to the 8th century . to the 1st century BC, which, as it is presumed, housed the workers and the foremen-lords of the ancient iron mines.

The view from there to the beach and the Aegean Sea is unique so we highly recommend this very short climb to Ai Giorgis.

Access to the beaches of Cape Doro

This particular area is one of the most remote in the otherwise not so touristic southern Evia. Therefore, most of the beaches, with the exception of Potami, are either accessible only by boat (speedboat, inflatable boat, sailing boat, etc.) or by dirt road and some of them with a lot of walking. From Karystos, however, there are also some day trips by inflatable boat. How often depends on the weather and especially the intensity of the winds.

Depending on where you want to go, consult the map and better yet ask the locals about the state of the roads and of course tell them what car you plan to drive.

Although the quickest and perhaps the most beautiful way is to follow the sea route, check very well and just before you start what the weather will be like throughout the day and especially how windy it will be on your journey.

And remember that even with a 4 Beaufort north wind, the wave is much bigger than in Karystos and other areas of the southern Evian. The area is famous for its wild sea so be careful and enjoy!

Beaches of South Evia, South Evian Gulf.

From Marmari (1 hour by boat from the port of Rafina) with the exception of Almyropotamos which is closer to Styra (45 minutes from the port of Agia Marina). The most famous beach of those you will see in the photos below is Megali Ammos beach (the protagonist of the EOT’s advertising spot for 2020), known for its particular changeable shape which is different every year depending on the sea currents and the waves. Η Big Sand is a very popular beach and a meeting place for friends of the sea. . not only from Greece but also from Europe.

The beach in the new 2020 campaign of the Greek National Tourism Organization. And yet it changes its shape, read below

The big disadvantage of Megali Ammos beach is that it is exposed to the strong northerly winds that usually blow in Marmari and South Evia. So if you are not a wind or kite surfer then it is advisable to avoid Megali Ammos and go from the left side of the bay of Marmari (as you get off the boat) to Kokkini and Fygia beaches.

Especially in Kokkini the wind is very strong but Fygia is a good solution with less people and a sea friendly for children since the bottom in most places is shallow enough for your little ones to play.

Accommodation in Marmari

A little further away from Marmari

If you feel like driving, from Fygia you can find other beaches in the South Evian Gulf, following the coastal road to the small settlement and Portolfia beach. We should note here that in Fygia and its beach you will find 2 tavernas at the beginning of the beach, a grill shop about halfway along and a restaurant at the end.

On the road from Fygia to Portolafia you will find several beaches such as Agia Irini, Triantafyllenia and Boubouki (or Limnionas). Generally speaking, Triantafyllenia is the most beautiful and with the easiest access, and very importantly, if it is very windy, the small bay with its turquoise waters is not particularly affected.

The beach at Niborio

Although southern Evia is our favourite destination, we had not visited the seaside settlement of Niborio until this year (summer 2020). For this omission we had already begun to regret as soon as we saw the first images from above, on the narrow and in some places rough road leading from Kapsala to South Evia. Arriving at the beach we said we would never again make the mistake of ignoring this beautiful creek of the southern Evian.

With a beautiful long beach, partly organized with umbrellas and fortunately without music and crystal clear turquoise waters, Niborio gives you from the beginning the feeling that time has stopped in past decades, a feeling that becomes even more intense as the sun sets and you walk to the other side of the beach with the harbor and the families that you understand that they will stay there until it gets dark and maybe even later.

Not much to do, house to beach/beach to house and perhaps that’s where the beauty of this particular place lies. After all, in the summer and on your vacation you might not need more to disconnect from your daily habits.

Nea Styra is 27 km and half an hour from the Marmari. Although you will travel more kilometers, the potential gain is also in the cost of the transfer (3.5 per passenger and 16 euros per car, a total of 39 euros round trip as opposed to the 60 euros needed for the Rafina-Marmari route) and in the more time options as from Agia Marina Attica the routes are more frequent to southern Evia and Nea Styra.
