Tower of Tinos, an open-air museum of Cycladic art
Pyrgos (also called Panormos, you will see it on google maps) is the largest village of Tinos and is located in the northern part of the island at a distance of 25 km from the port and Chora.
It is one of the most beautiful traditional villages not only of Tinos but also of the Cyclades, with a rich history and a huge artistic tradition as it is the home of two of the most important Greek sculptors, Giannoulis Halepas and Dimitris Filippotis and the great painter Nikiforos Lytras.

The island of Tinos is known for its natural beauty, the temple of Megalochari and the famous Tinian white and green marble. In fact, according to tradition, the ancient sculptor Phidias had come to the island to teach the art of marble carving while many of the monuments of Delos are made with Tinian marble.

In modern times, however, the development of modern Greek sculpture began in Pyrgos, with abundant marble from nearby quarries, and reached its peak from the mid-19th century until the mid-20th century.
During this period, thousands of people worked and worked in one way or another “on” the marble of Tinos, while the settlement of Pyrgos was a favourite creative field in which artists generously unfolded their talent.

What makes a special impression in Pyrgos (Panormos) of Tinos is the intense presence of marble in every corner of the settlement. The artists of Pyrgos and the villagers of the village have taken care to beautify their place by creating elaborate marble decorations in the churches, marble infrared and flat staircases in their houses.
Many times the impressions can be stolen by small details such as a carved table in a café or even the marble sign that shows the bus stop coming from the port, and is in itself an example of the willingness of all those involved in marble sculpture in Pyrgos to create works of art and mainly the preservation of the tradition of the place.

View in Pyrgos (Panormos) Tinos
Today in Pyrgos operates the Preparatory & Vocational School of Fine Arts Panormos Tinos, founded in 1955 with the aim of learning marble art(www.tinosartschool.gr), the museum of Giannoulis Halepas (housed in his family home), the Museum of Marble Art in the Tower of Tinos (created by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP)) and the Museum of Tinian Artists.

So try to get lost in the picturesque Cycladic alleys of Pyrgos while do not miss to visit the small and beautiful square of the village. Have lunch or simply rest under the shade of the century-old plane tree and drink the cool water of the monumental marble fountain which is an impressive and beautiful example of Tinian art.
Access / Transport in Tinos
Daily departures from the ports of Piraeus and Rafina. From Tinos there are also connections to several islands of the Aegean Sea. In addition, there is daily communication from the town of Tinos with the rest of the island and the road network is very good. Finally, there is a taxi station next to the old port.
How to get to Pyrgos
From Chora of Tinos there are two roads to the northern part of the island where the villages of Pyrgos and Ormos Panormos are located. The first and the easiest is through the villages of Kardiani and Ysternia. If you have never been to Pyrgos before and are going to go once only take this road, and stop at both villages I mentioned if you have time.

The second way is the northern road, which passes through the village of Aetofolia and ends in Pyrgos, passing outside the not so well known villages of Tinos, Venerdatos and Platia, 5 minutes from Pyrgos. It is a quiet route with a very nice view of the Aegean Sea and the wild side of Tinos with thousands of terraces that really impressed us. Arriving at Pyrgos enjoy the view of the islet Planitis and the small bay of Panormos.
Ferry connection to Lavrio and southern Evia
From 2022 until 2024 there is a connection to southern Evia, specifically from the port of Karystos. In 2023 it was by speedboat (which was based in the port of Lavrio), in 2024 as we learned with a conventional ship. So you can combine both destinations, a few days in Marmari and Karystos and from there within two hours by ferry to Andros, Tinos or Syros. In 2025 there was no access from South Evia(Karystos), which of course doesn’t mean there won’t be in 2026….

Ormos Panormos Bay
The port of Pyrgos is Ormos Panormos, a small village with taverns and tavernas and 3-4 small or larger beaches nearby. The beach of the village is called Stafida and you will find it on the left as you reach Ormos Panormos. From Stafida there is also a small dirt road to the beaches of Agia Thalassa and Kavallourko.
Be careful because if a north wind catches and a wave rises, the passage through Stafida beach by car to the dirt road is so short that you may not be able to pass. It is worth going to these two beaches, especially the second one after passing the small picturesque chapel.

If you now drive through Panormos Bay, you will reach after 3-4 minutes the largest beach of Rochari. With natural shade and a small beach bar at its edge, it is a favorite destination for residents and visitors of Ormos Panormos.
