At the southern end of Evia you will find some of the most beautiful beaches of the island. Most of the beaches of the wider area Karystos are not organized and are ideal for a relatively short trip to untouched and beautiful seas and beaches.
Specifically, we can divide the area of Karystos Bay and its beaches into three parts. Those located:
- in or next to the town of Karystos
 - to the west of the city and specifically in Paximada and
 - on the east side towards the Eagle and Bouros area.

routes Rafina – Karystos
Book your tickets to Karystos immediately avoiding queues and waiting (choose Marmari as the port of arrival, from there it is a 10 to 15 minute drive to Karystos).
Here we can add the beaches that you can reach starting from Karystos. These are the beaches in the area of Cape Kafireas or the better known Cape Doro.

Geographically they are located at the southernmost tip of the island, in the narrow passage between Evia and Andros. It is an area with strong winds and rough seas (Kavo Doro is famous for its shipwrecks since ancient times) on most days especially when strong north winds blow.
But when the sea is calm you can enjoy a unique area that is still almost untouched by tourism and human activities (except for the installation of several wind turbines).

Potami and Archampoli beaches in Cape Doros
We will mention here only two of the beaches in Kavos Doros and refer you to our more detailed article about the beaches in South Evia and the part about Kavos Doros. These are the beaches Potami and Archampoli.

The first is easily accessible by car (45-55 minutes from Karystos) while the second is only accessible on foot from the village of Thymi and the old path or by sea (there are organized daily excursions from Karystos, but not so often since the sea is usually rough).
In Potami you will find two taverns and a canteen, all with delicious dishes, while in Archampoli you will find instead of taverns, a chapel and the ruins of an ancient settlement (from the 8th to the 1st century BC!) as well as the traces of an ancient iron mine abandoned in the Roman era.

It is worth visiting our more detailed article about the beaches in South Evia and enjoy the photo gallery from the day trip we made to the beaches and the green streams with the waterfalls and the pedestals of the area of Cavo Doro.
Beaches in or next to Karystos
In the city of Karystos you will find on the right, as you look at the sea, and after you have reached the coastal road the long beach with a length of more than one and a half kilometers called Gallides or Galida.
At its beginning it is relatively organized with umbrellas and beach cafes and tavernas, some of which belong to the hotels located on the promenade.
Its largest part is not organized and for a few years now you will find the only green bus that for decades ran the route Piraeus – Syntagma.

On the other side of the town you will find the beach Psili Ammos or Kohili (from the homonymous beach bar that is located there) which is located approximately between two big hotels of Karystos.
In front of the beach bar and one hotel there are sunbeds and umbrellas but you can also sit on the right side of the beach which is for those who don’t want to order or pay for anything (I don’t know if they charge for the sunbeds or if you just pay for what you order.)
Beaches of Karistou – area Paximada

To reach the beaches of Paximada follow the coastal road Karystou until the end of the long beach on the right of the town. There the road turns right and immediately left, cross a very small bridge and continue next to and over the sea.
You will find the first beach but it is advisable to continue driving and reach the point where the road goes uphill and several forks begin. As you will see the road network is surprisingly good, signposted and extensive.
At Cape Paximada the roads have been built for several years and the area is intended for residential use. At the first major intersection you will see a small sign for Agia Paraskevi. It is a very beautiful
So you will see several more beaches while the road will lead you anyway to the beach of Agia Paraskevi and if you continue you will see other smaller or larger bays.
In general, have an appetite for searching and you will surely find the beach that suits you best.
Beaches of Karystou – area of Bouros

The beaches towards the area of Bouros are located on the opposite side of the bay, to the east of Karystos. Once you reach the coastal road of the town, turn left and continue past the beach of Kohili or Psili Ammos and the hotels you will find nearby.

After passing the village of Kato Aetos at the small junction you will turn right to find yourself again by the sea. From there you will find many small or large beaches.
The first large and partially organized (fortunately the umbrellas do not occupy the whole beach and when we last went in July 2023 the music was playing quite low without disturbing) is Marmara beach.

Moving on to the area of Bouros, the next partially organised large beach is Kavos or Alykes. This is probably the most popular beach in the area and especially on weekends it is filled with people coming from Karystos.
If you continue you will find other beaches , the most beautiful being the one at the end of the road with the statue( the beach is also calledAgalma ), the shallow turquoise waters and the pine trees on the slope to the left.
A dissonance are the stones from an abandoned building that we hope in a few years to have been covered by the vegetation of the area (Unfortunately, after ten years since our last visit, the stones are still there). The beach is now organised with sunbeds and umbrellas.

Rooms in Karystos
Find hotels and rooms to let in the Karystos but also in Marmari through the search form.
It is advisable to book well in advance if you want to be in the area in August as the crowds are quite large and the rooms on some days are definitely not enough for everyone.
