The traditional settlements of Megalo and Mikro Papigo in West Zagori are two of the most beautiful and well-preserved traditional settlements in this special region of Epirus. Whatever the season, if you visit Papigo in Zagoria (Mikro and Megalo Papigo are often referred to as just Papigo) you will be impressed by the wild natural landscape and the traditional architecture with the use of stone by the famous craftsmen of Zagori.

Walk along the narrow stone cobbled streets and enjoy the smells and views of the rare natural landscape.

Access to Papigo

To get to Papigo you have to travel 63 km from Ioannina, 345 km from Thessaloniki via Egnatia road and 485 km from Athens by crossing the bridge of Rio Antirio. Arriving in Papigo park your car at the first parking lot and start your wanderings in the village.

The view of the mountainous massif of Tymfi will literally take your breath away. The imposing rocks, known as the Astraka Towers ( Astraka is one of the peaks of Tymfi) stand like giants above the two settlements and especially above Mikro Papigo (located at an altitude of 950 meters) whose houses look like small grey dots in this unique landscape.

From Mikro Papigo starts the famous path (good physical condition is required for those who want to cross it) that leads to the shelter of Astraka, which you will reach after about 3 hours(http://www.astrakarefuge.com), but also to an alpine lake, the famous Drakolimni.

In the square of Mikro Papigo with the large plane tree, the church of Taxiarches dominates, in whose lobby I was lucky enough to taste hot tsipouro that had just come out of the cauldron and was really the best tsipouro I have ever tasted!

Food at Papigo

In both settlements you will find small cafes or cafes with delicious pies and other edibles for the way by car or your hiking routes while if you want to eat properly we sat in the traditional tavern Dias in Mikro Papigo. We went twice, the first to try the excellent bean soup and sausages and the second for the amazing ribs.

We stayed only two nights in Mikro Papigo and so we didn’t have the chance to try the other good tavernas and restaurants in Mikro and Megalo Papigo.

The swimming pools

During your visit to Papigo do not forget to visit the swimming pools located on the route between Papigo and Mikro Papigo (about 2 km long).

The swimming pools are an impressive stone geological formation in which you will find small natural pools (pedestals) with crystal clear waters which, during the summer months, many people prefer them for a cool to cold dive!
