Lake Plastira and the surrounding landscape is one of the most beautiful places in the country and perhaps the best case of harmonious human intervention in the environment. The result is an idyllic place worth visiting in all seasons of the year.
History of Lake Plastira
The artificial lake Plastira or Lake Tavropou was created in 1959 with the completion of the dam of the river Tavropou, while the idea of creating the lake at this point was conceived years ago by General Nikolaos Plastira who, about thirty years ago, had visited his homeland and had been troubled by the floods that had plagued the inhabitants of the surrounding areas for years.
So he thought that the creation of the dam there would not only put an end to this chronic problem but would also solve a large part of the irrigation issue of the rural areas of Karditsa and the entire Thessalian plain.
The years that followed were difficult for our country and during the Second World War, in the area where the lake is now located, the first Allied airfield was opened, making a significant contribution to the fight against the German occupiers.

Today, Lake Plastira reminds nothing of those difficult years as with the passage of time and especially in recent decades it has transformed into one of the most popular excursion paradises for escapes either near the serene surface of the lake or in the mountainous destinations around it. The tourist development of the area is particularly intense and in the vast majority of cases it takes place in harmonious coexistence with the environment.
Access information and distances
Access to the lake is very easy from most parts of our country. Specifically, it is 326 km from Athens and you can reach it via Lamia and Domokos. A few kilometres from there, either follow the road to Karditsa or turn left and you will reach directly the first village of the lake, Kastania.
From Thessaloniki, Lake Plastira is 240 kilometres away via Larissa and Karditsa, while you can also take the longer but perhaps more comfortable route via Egnatia road, from which you will exit at Grevena for Trikala.
