Η Tinos has excellent beaches such as Agios Sostis, Kolimpirtha, Livada, Pachia Ammos and several others. Most of them are easily accessible by car and depending on the weather, since the island is famous for its strong northerly but cooling winds, you can find beaches to play with the waves or just avoid them.

last visit: July 2023
New photos and information
from our 3rd visit to the beautiful island of Tinos in July 2023.
Let’s take a look at some of its magnificent beaches Tinos.

Beaches near Tinos Town and the port
If you are looking for something for a quick dip or don’t have time to take the car, you can walk a little and go to the beaches of either Agios Fokas, south of Chora, or Stavros and Agios Markos on the road to Kionia.
Agios Markos and Stavros are two very small beaches that we do not recommend, unlike Agios Fokas, which is one of the largest beaches on the island and is worth a visit as it has a beautiful sea and shade from tamarisks in most of its area.

Agios Fokas Beach – Tinos Town
It is the largest and most organized beach of Tinos, which is however relatively exposed to the northern winds (if it blows over 6-7 Beaufort it can be a nuisance).
Accommodation in Tinos
It is located near Chora, while as you move away it widens and becomes a huge beach with rich sand and shaded by tamarisk trees. Along the back of the beach you will find a plethora of tourist shops that cater to every taste.
In addition, in recent years there have been several beach bars that do not disturb as large parts of the beach are still unorganized so you can spread your towel and enjoy the crystal clear waters of Tinos with a view of Mykonos and Delos.
Beach in Kionia
If you now take the car, the nearest beach in Tinos Town is Kionia, 5 minutes from the port and specifically on the left as you get off the boat.
The road leads us there after 3 km and you will find, apart from the long beach, a number of restaurants, taverns, rooms to let and hotels.

Arriving at Kionia, the first time you may think that the road ends there and turns only right towards the settlement and the small hotels or rooms to let.
And yet, if you go straight through the small dirt road, which is essentially a part and continuation of the beach right in front of the now abandoned large building complex of an old hotel (2023), you will find the road that goes up to meet the main road of Tinos that leads to the western and northern part (the villages of Ysternia, Pyrgos and Panormos).
In western Tinos you will find several small sandy bays with beaches from organized to completely secluded, everything you need for relaxation and several enjoyable dives in the type of beaches depending on your tastes.
So let’s look at a few:
Agios Romanos Beach
Taking the main road from Chora to Ysternia or the main road from Tower and shortly after the main intersection that goes to Kalloni or the beach of Kolimbithra we will find a sign that says to Agios Romanos beach.
A visit is mandatory since, as you will see from the photos, it is one of the most beautiful beaches of Tinos.

Apigania and Kantani Beach
A little secret about the beaches of Tinos is the beautiful beaches of Apigania and Kantani. These are located north of Agios Romanos and are not accessible by car, at least not as far as the sea.
There is a path as you descend towards Agios Romanos, on the right of the road, and a small sign that says “To Apigania”. You will need to keep an eye out or be suspicious of possibly other parked cars where the trail starts.

The path is easy and it will take you about 10 to 20 minutes to reach Apigania beach. It’s worth the effort as it is still an unorganized beach, far from beach bars, music you may not like but you are obliged to listen to on organized beaches, sunbeds or even beds… (yes yes yes we saw that this year).
So spread out your towel and enjoy the contact with the sand of the beach and the Tinian land. If it’s hot enough or you go to the beach at midday and you can’t stand the sun, you will need your own umbrella.
If you are now in the mood for more walking, like us who don’t put down our feet easily, you can follow a not so obvious path at the end of Apigania beach to go to the next beach called Kantani. The path is a bit uphill only at the beginning and after 20 minutes or less you will find yourself maybe completely alone on a beautiful beach with turquoise waters.

In most of it there is a curtain to get into the sea which is not slippery in 2-3 places that we used to get in and out. Then a sandy seabed awaits you while at the edges of the rocks you will find several small and big fish to enjoy swimming with a mask (snorkelling in “Greek”).
From Kantani the return walk to the road and your car can take a couple of 40 minutes, so a dip halfway and the beach of Apigania is mandatory before the uphill part of the path. Bring a beach umbrella and plenty of water before you set off though.
Kardiani or Giannaki bay and Kalyvia beach
It is another cove with a small and nice beach with shallow transparent waters, sheltered from the strong northern winds. It is located below the village of Kardiani from which you can see the beach from above.
In the small creek on the left, which you will see as you drive down, is the beach of Kalyvia.

In Kardiani you will find food and some rooms while in Kalyvia you will enjoy exclusively the swimming and the sea, so buy mainly water if you don’t want to walk back and forth with plastic bottles in your hand.
UPDATE: This was in 2006, in 2023 when we swam at Kalyvia beach there is a large beach bar, as you can see in the photo, with quite loud music when we went. This is something that we generally find quite annoying as it forces us to listen to music that we probably don’t like (if we did like it, another swimmer might not) throughout our stay on the beach and while we were sitting on the edge of the beach, as far away from the beach bar as possible…
Accommodation in Tinos
Ysternion Bay
Just below the village of Ysternia is a small and very beautiful bay with a beautiful beach. Apart from the beach, there you will find 2-3 tavernas and a good number of rooms to let, compared to the size of the area, while a hotel with a view of the sea and the island of Syros has recently started operating.

While we visited the village of Ysternia during our most recent visit in July 2023, we didn’t have time to go down to the bay of Ysternia for a swim and a new photo shoot. So the photo you see above is from 2006. We hope things have stayed somewhat like this.
Agios Sostis Beach
On the more touristic side of Tinos you will find crystal clear turquoise shallow waters and several organized sandy beaches. Overlooking Delos and Mykonos you will enjoy the marine beauty of the island and you will understand how cosmopolitan the beautiful Tinos can be.
At the beach of Agios Sostis be careful where you lay your towel because a relatively large part of the beach is “open” to cars and motorbikes (we saw both).

So if you don’t want to find signs of pomegranates on your towel choose carefully where you put your towels (unless you go to the sunbeds of two or three relaxed beach bars)
Kolimbithra Beach
We have left to the end one of the most popular and touristic areas to enjoy your swim in Tinos. This is the area of Kolimbithra where you will find not one or two as we wrote in an earlier version of our article but four (4) beautiful beaches within a short distance from each other.
The first one, Megali Ammos, is large and quite wide while the second one, Mikro Ammos, at a very short distance, is smaller and more sheltered.

Thus, depending on your tastes, you can fully satisfy your need for contact with the Aegean Sea and enjoy your meal or sleep in the two tavernas or in the hotel that are right next to and above the second beach.
The first two beaches attract the largest number of people, with Megali Ammos being the hot spot for the younger crowd due to the beach bar with reeds, for protection from the strong north winds, which plays beach games.
In Mikri Ammos we found more families, who after their swim can sit down for lunch at the two taverns-restaurants right above the beach. If you now continue past the complex of rooms to let, the short dirt road will lead you to the long beach Apothikes.
There things are much more relaxed with few people and only a small beach bar at the far end of the beach.

There you will find a few sunbeds and relaxed summer music. Most of the Apothikes beach is not organised, with a few small tamarisk trees at the back of the beach that will probably not cover you enough during the midday hours of a hot summer day.
And after you have reached there it would be a shame not to visit and see even from above the last surprise beach which is located 3-4 minutes down the dirt road after the warehouses. This is the beach of Old Agios Filaktos or Agios Filaktos plain, which is the ideal destination for swimming if you want to completely avoid the beach bars and sunbeds/umbrellas.

It is smaller than the beaches of Megali Ammos and Apothikes but with wild beauty and equally beautiful deep waters.
Livadia Beach
Perhaps one of the most isolated beaches of the island but one of the most special because of the strange rock formations and the scattered boulders that exist around the beach. It is advisable to visit it when it is not very windy.
This is important to remember as if there is a lot of wind and big waves it is quite dangerous as there are big pebbles and stones on the beach that are easily blown by the waves and can hit your head.
And as a local told us “You can go to Livadia either with no wind to have a perfect swim or with 8 Beaufort winds to stay away from it but enjoy the view of the huge waves crashing on the rocks”. We however went with a 4 Beaufort north wind and it was still perfect (not recommended for those with mobility problems when it’s maybe even 3 Beaufort unlike Pachia Ammos beach which has no pebbles and you can get in and out easily even with relatively big waves).

When we visited in 2006 and 2023 the dirt road was not in such a good condition. Last update on the road in 2023. This of course depends on the car, its height and the driver.
Pachia Ammos Beach
Its sand may be ‘thick’ but what makes it unique is its greenish hue. Pachia Ammos beach is relatively accessible by a comfortable dirt road for a few meters. Access is from the area of Aghios Ioannis-Porto and a little attention is needed at the point where the road is relatively narrow and has a steep slope. However, a dip in its waters is definitely worth it.

In July 2023 we didn’t see enough of the small signs showing the way and using Google Maps we reached a dead end, difficult for cars. So it is easier to follow the road that leads you directly to the building just above the beach and from which the 10-minute trail starts.
See the exact spot on the map with the beaches of Tinos below.

What we particularly liked about Pachia Ammos beach is the fact that even with a north wind with big waves, you can swim there as the huge sandy beach continues into the sea creating a greenish sandy seabed of unique beauty. When we went there, we did not find a single pebble which in other beaches becomes dangerous when it is very windy and has big waves.
Beaches in northern Tinos, Pyrgos and Panormos
If you go to Tinos, you must visit the northern part of the island where Pyrgos, Panormos, Ysternia and Kardiani are located. These are beautiful villages, each with its own unique way of life. For Pyrgos, the largest and richest and perhaps most famous village of Tinos, and its port Panormos we have dedicated a separate article that you can read here.
So if you find yourself in northern Tinos, take advantage and enjoy the beautiful waters and beaches that are located in this part of the island by combining them with a visit to one or more of the villages of the area. The most beautiful beaches are located within walking distance of the seaside village of Panormos with its small fishing boats and fish taverns along its small waterfront.

The beach of the village is on your left hand side as soon as you reach it, you will see it immediately anyway. It’s called Stafida and it gathers the village’s marida (kids) and those who want to take a dip without having to take a car.
Perhaps the most popular beach in the area is Rochari. It is located two minutes by car from Panormos and can be found by simply crossing the coastal road through Panormos. As you will see in the photo of Rohari you will also find a beach bar at one end.

Agia Thalassa and Kavalourko beaches
We didn’t swim there because we preferred to explore the other two beaches of the area that we learned of their existence only this year.
These two beaches are‘Agia Thalassa‘ and Kavalourko. You will find them by driving through Stafida beach, it is really very strange and narrow the passage on the left of the beach as if the weather changes to a strong north wind and a wave rises at Stafida you will have to wait for the wind to drop before you can drive away from there.
When we went there it was almost apnea so no problem. The dirt road to get to this point starts about 100 meters before you reach Panormos, on the left. I took the photo below at the moment we were crossing Stafida beach by car.

To reach these two beaches, the easiest way is to leave your car at Panormos and walk along the short dirt road to Agia Thalassa beach. The distance is 1 km and is easy to walk as it is a straight road and not uphill. From Agia Thalassa now, you will find a small path that will lead you to Kavallourko beach.

It is famous for the carved representation on the rock, but when we arrived and took a bath we forgot to look for it (the heat had gotten to us and we completely forgot about it). I do remember though that quite a few people were walking to the islet of Planitis or just before the passage to it so it will be there somewhere to see it if you find yourself at Kavallourko beach.
Both of these beaches did not impress me so much for their sand as for the sea. Especially at Kavallourkos, it’s worth going with apnea to swim to the shallow passage on the islet Planitis.

There, put on your mask and enjoy the rich biodiversity of the area on the left with large herds of salps, sargos and scaros. On the left of the passage enjoy the endless blue of the Aegean Sea and if you feel like walking a little, climb up to the lighthouse to see the view.
Beaches in Tinos, for next time
With so many beaches in Tinos, it’s only natural that we won’t have time to see them all. So we have left some for the next time we are lucky enough to be there.
Some of them are Vathi beach in the northern part which can only be accessed by sea, Santa Margarita beach under the relatively unknown but beautiful village of Potamia, Agios Petros beach in the western part, between Agios Romanos and Kalyvia and Lychnaftia beach in the southern part and quite close to Pachia Ammos.
I’m sure there are others that are smaller or unknown but for now this is our goal.

Access / Transport in Tinos
Daily departures from the ports of Piraeus and Rafina. From Tinos there are also connections to several islands of the Aegean Sea. In addition, there is daily communication from the town of Tinos with the rest of the island and the road network is very good. Finally, there is a taxi station next to the old port.
From the summer of 2022, Tinos will be connected to the port of Lavrio and then to the port of Karysto in southern Evia every Thursday and Friday. This is very convenient if you want to combine the Cyclades with the island of Evia (see the beautiful beaches of South Evia) for your holidays. We took the Caldera Vista speedboat from Karystos at 5+ in the afternoon and after 2.5 hours we were at the port of Syros(photos and tips from beautiful Syros)
