The church of Panagia Paraportiani in Mykonos

One of the most important architectural and religious monuments of the Cyclades and the Aegean is the unique church of Panagia Paraportiani in Mykonos. It is located in the cosmopolitan capital of the island, next to the blue waters of the Aegean Sea, usually foamed by the winds, with easy access and “sitting” on the old castle of the island. In fact, it owes its name to the castle as it is located next to the old small gate of the castle, the paraport.

One of the peculiarities of the church of Panagia Paraportiani is the housing of 5 churches in its special “body” which was an old part of the castle, since during the Middle Ages, part of the church we see today was a rectangular fortification tower.

Four of these churches are on the ground floor while the fifth, Panagia Paraportiani, sits above them like a dome. Of the four churches on the ground floor, the oldest is that of Agioi Anargyroi, which according to some people began to be built in the 15th century and according to others in the 17th century. The other churches are those of Agia Anastasia, Agios Sozontos and Agios Efstathios which were completed at the beginning of the 20th century.
