At the old station in the village of Milies of Pelion, one of the most picturesque trains of the Greek railway tradition, the famous Moutzouris, is resting.

Moutzouris comes to us from the end of the 19th century please and specifically from the distant 1896 when the line connecting Volos with Lechonia was completed. The rest of the section up to the station at Milies was delivered in 1903.

The route of Moutzouris

The Pelion train today does not start from Volos, but you will see parts of the lines on the coastal road from Volos to Milies, but from Ano Lechonia (12 km from Volos) towards the picturesque Milies.

The length of the route is 16 kilometres and it will take Moutzouris about 90-95 minutes to cross it. This allows you to enjoy at your leisure the unique experience and the view from Ano Lechonia to the station at Milies.

What makes the Pelion or Moutzouris train special?

It is a historic route with a lifespan of over 110 years and one of the narrowest railway lines in the world, only 60 cm wide!

If you add the advanced construction design for the time along with the uniqueness of the natural beauty of the area it crosses, you can understand why the Pelion Train steals the hearts of those who have the luck to travel with it.

The best way to get to the station of Milies from the centre of the village is to follow the downhill cobbled path that starts just below the central square of Milies.

The uphill return will be somewhat tiring and if you are with a group of friends, someone can drive you to the station and you can climb back up to the centre of the village together.

After arriving at the Moutzouris railway station in Milies you can enter the ticketing area where there is a small exhibition with useful information about the history and operation of the Pelion train.

From then on and while you are waiting for the arrival of Moutjouris, we suggest you walk on the train tracks until at least the famous and rare iron bridge by Evaristo De Chirico (Italian architect, father of the famous artist Giorgio di Chirico).

The route is lush green and if you have the time and appetite, continue for another 5 minutes until you reach the point where you can see the bridge from a distance and through the wooded slopes, while after the right turn you will have a very nice view of Milies.

At Mileon station

Return to Milies station and listen to the whistle of the train’s arrival and the creaking on the old tracks. We waited for it just before the arched bridge the station at Milies and really as soon as the engine and the old cars of the legendary Moutzouris emerged it was like being in a moment dozens of years back.

Stay in the beautiful Pelion Milies

Back then, the Pelion train was not a museum exhibit and a monument to be preserved as it is now, but the dominant means of transporting goods and connecting the population of a large part of Pelion with the city of Volos.

Immediately after the arrival of Moutzouris in Milies, it is worth seeing the manual rotation of the train ‘s engine, which is disconnected from the wagons in order to go and get stuck in the last wagon to start the short but magical journey back.

The train, in the summer of 2022, arrives at Milies at 11:35 and if you wish to return the same day, it departs from there to Ano Lechonia at 15:00, so you have about less than 3.5 hours to explore Milies station and Milies, the beautiful Pelion village, which you can walk to from an uphill cobbled path.

If you don’t have it with the hills and walking you better go by car to the village if this is possible. However, don’t get there and don’t visit Milies because it will be a shame.
