The city of Athens and its name
Athens is the capital of the Greek state and the largest city in the country by far, with approximately 4.5 million people living in Athens and its suburbs.
According to mythology, its name is due to the effort made by two of the most important gods of Dodecathus, Athena and Poseidon, in order for the city to take their name.
In order to achieve this, they agreed to compete and let the citizens of Athens choose the winner. So they each had to make a gift to the city and its citizens.

Poseidon struck the earth with his trident and built a spring from which he gushed sea water, thus symbolizing the city’s dominance over the seas. Athena , on the other hand, gave the city an olive tree which symbolized peace and prosperity.
This strange competition was finally won by Athena, thus giving her name to Athens.
Acropolis and Parthenon
Although the wider area of Athens and Attica is dotted with ancient monuments and souvenirs of another golden age, the most important of all is still the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis.
The Acropolis, one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, is a vertical rock about 150 metres high that dominates the Athenian landscape.
It has a flat top on which some of the most important cultural monuments of humanity were created.

The Parthenon Temple
The most important of course is none other than the Parthenon temple , which was dedicated to the goddess Athena and was built during the term of office of Pericles , the highest democratic office of the city, during the so-called golden age of Pericles (5th century BC).
Specifically, the Parthenon was built between 447 and 438 BC by the architects Iktinos and Callicrates. The famous sculptural decoration of the temple was completed about 5 years later and was the work of the famous sculptor Phidias.
In the Acropolis, apart from the Parthenon, you will find other important monuments of antiquity such as the
- Propylaea
- Erechtheion
- Temple of Athena Nike
and others.

Under the sacred rock of the Acropolis and almost opposite the ancient theatre of Dionysus you will find the new imposing and rich in findings and monuments, the new Acropolis Museum(www.theacropolismuseum.gr).
