To the southwest of the Ancient Corinth rises the rock of Acrocorinth at a height of 575 metres. Ancient Corinth was built at its foot, while its location and its steep character made it an ideal fortification position. The Acrocorinth and the natural protection it provided was exploited by the Corinthians who fortified the rock, creating the first fortified acropolis during the tyranny of Periander and his father Cypse in the 7th century BC.

The predominance of the Romans in 146 BC caused, as was natural, the destruction of the Acropolis of Acrocorinth but its important defensive position led Julius Caesar to rebuild the fortifications in 44 BC while repairs and additions of new fortified positions in Acrocorinth were also made by the Byzantines from the 7th century AD onwards. Since then the strategically important position was occupied by the Franks, the Ioannites, the Turks with Mohammed II in 1458, the Venetians in 1687, the Turks again in 1715 and in 1823 it was handed over to the Greeks after the liberation of Corinth.

Ascending the castle of Akrokorinthos

Three defensive fortification zones with walls, bastions, battlements, moats and well-fortified entrances were created in the castle of Acrocorinth . Inside there are remains of temples from almost all periods of time and it is worth climbing up to the highest point where you will find parts of the base of the ancient temple of Aphrodite. From there the view to the four points of the horizon is stunning. You will see the new city of Corinth and Loutraki, the sea of the Corinthian Gulf and the Saronic Gulf, the plains of Corinth and others depending on the purity of the atmosphere.

You can see the findings from the archaeological site of Akrokorinthos at the Archaeological Museum of Corinth through the article with useful information and photographic material
