Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Islands and certainly one of the most beautiful in the Ionian Sea.

It is famous for its beautiful beaches such as Myrtos, Platis Gialos, Makris Gialos, Skala, Antisamos and some of the most beautiful traditional island settlements such as Assos and of course the cosmopolitan and beautiful Fiskardo.

Argostoli and Lixouri

The capital of Kefalonia is Argostoli with about 10 thousand inhabitants. It is built in a large natural harbour and offers all the services and amenities of a large city without losing at any point the feeling of being on an island of the Ionian Islands.

A walk along the coastal road or the large pedestrian street in the centre of Argostoli is enough to get into the rhythm of life in the Ionian Islands.

The second largest settlement is Lixouri with about 4 thousand inhabitants. It is located in a beautiful natural landscape and in a fairly close distance you will find many beautiful beaches.

Beaches in Kefalonia

As we mentioned in our introduction, Kefalonia has some of the most beautiful and famous beaches in the country.

These are beaches that cater to all tastes as some have golden sand with lush shallow waters in easily accessible parts of the island while others have fine light-coloured pebbles with steep blue waters, high cliffs hanging overhead and steep or even difficult access for those who want less crowds and more quiet.

But let’s take things from the beginning and talk about some of the most beautiful and most famous beaches of the island.

Quite close to Argostoli are the beautiful beaches of Makris and Platis Gialos! They are two adjacent but separate beaches with fine golden sand and green crystal clear shallow waters, while pine trees hang on the back of the beaches. Close to Argostoli is the coastal area of Lasi with several elegant hotels and small sandy coves.

In Lixouri the beach that makes the difference is Xi. Located 8 km south of the town, it is quite organized and impresses with the reddish color of the sand and the steep white rocks in some parts of the beach.

The most famous and impressive beach of the island is of course the beach of Myrtos! The view it offers from above is unique and photographed in all the tourist publications and the colour of the sea is perhaps unique. Myrtos is located at a distance of about 30 kilometers from Argostoli and before the well-known seaside village of Assos.

Other beaches of Kefalonia that are worth visiting are the beach of Skala and Antisamos.

The picturesque Assos and the cosmopolitan Fiskardo

To get to know the island of Kefalonia even better you should visit two seaside settlements. The one of Assos, a picturesque village built in a small creek with traditional houses on one side and the castle of Assos with a unique view of the village and the steep beaches on the opposite green hill. And of course you can walk to the small but cosmopolitan and beautiful Fiskardo, in the northern part of the island, with sailing boats and fishing boats moored in a small harbour in which the picturesque houses of the settlement are reflected.

Other destinations worth seeing in Kefalonia are the stunning cave-lake of Melissani with its deep clear blue waters, the ports of Sami and Poros and the slopes of the towering Mount Ainos (1628 meters where the unique Kefalonian fir tree dominates.

Access to Kefalonia

You can reach Kefalonia either by boat or by plane as the island has an airport in Argostoli with which it is connected to Athens and Thessaloniki (via Athens). Kefalonia is connected by boat with two ports, those of Kyllini and Patras.

From Kyllini the ferry will take you to the port of Poros and during the summer season there are daily trips to Argostoli and Lixouri. From Patras there are routes to the third port of Kefalonia, Sami.

For the port of Poros the journey takes 1:15′ to 1:40 minutes but you will have to go to Kyllini while from Patras to Sami you will need 3 to 3:30′ hours. In addition, Fiskardo in the north of the island is also connected to the island of Lefkada which you can reach by road. Finally, Kefalonia is connected to the island of Ithaca from the port of Sami.

I don’t remember her name so if you know her name please send me a message or leave a comment.

However, the access times and the routes and destinations change depending on the season and the traffic to Kefalonia, so it would be advisable to check the available routes from the ports from where you will be travelling. Phone numbers are available in the“Useful Information” section at the top right of our page.
