Methoni is a beautiful picturesque town in the southwesternmost tip of the Peloponnese and the prefecture of Messinia, dominated by the well-preserved medieval castle with its high walls and the famous octagonal Bourtzi built on the edge of the peninsula of Methoni.

Access to Methoni

Methoni is 61 km from the capital of the prefecture Kalamata, 220 km from Patras and 292 km from Athens. From Athens follow the road to Tripoli, continue to Kalamata and a few kilometers before you reach the capital of Messinia turn right to Messini. In Messini you follow the Kalamata-Pylos road and when you reach Pylos you have another ten kilometres or so to Methoni.

The small town of Methoni has about 1.300 inhabitants and apart from its famous castle , it is famous for the good food in the seaside taverns and restaurants by the sea as well as for the beautiful sea and the several beaches either in the town or within a short distance by car.

When you arrive in Methoni you can go to the central market or follow the second route that leads directly to the castle and the beach. Most of its houses are two-storey with tiled roofs and flowered small balconies.

The reference point of Methoni could not be other than the famous medieval castle. It is one of the most important fortifications ever built in Greece and is a typical example of a castle town. The entrance of the castle is located on its northern side while a large moat separates it from the land.

Between them is built an impressive stone bridge with 14 arches! Within the walls of the castle are the church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, the tall granite column known as the Morosini column, the carved Venetian lions and the ruins of the Ottoman baths.

At the southern edge of the castle, the tourist attraction of the region, the famous octagonal tower on the island of Bourtzi, was built in the 15th century. At that time, of course, its role was purely defensive and it was also used as a place of interrogation and torture. It is connected to the castle by a stone bridge and the view from there when the sea is rough is literally breathtaking.
