Activities at Lake Plastira, archery, horseback riding or swimming?

The village of Kalyvia Pezoula is perhaps the most tourist destination in the beautiful Lake Plastiras . However, both the natural landscape of the lake and the tranquility you can enjoy on its shores have been preserved intact.

They are located just 30 km from Karditsa and can be your base for your tours to Lake Plastira and the Agrafa shelter.

From Kalyvia Pezoula you can ascend towards the settlement of Pezoula and the beautiful village of Filakti. In the first kilometers you will see on your right a very picturesque large hut that is the offices of the environmental organization “Frog Brasstos“.(I am not sure if this organization still exists as I visited it in 2010 and searching in 2025 I did not find anything about it except my report here, but the story is worth reading)

I had never heard anything like it before and I was very impressed by the name and especially how it can be connected to the environment. I had nothing to do but knock on the door and go in to ask.

I was warmly welcomed by Andreas Andreopoulos who, after a brief description of the action of his organization, explained how the name “Frog Brasstos” originated.

In short, man and climate change can be easily described by a frog put in a pot of water. The water is not hot but the temperature is gradually but very slowly rising. The frog is enjoying the water by vaguely feeling the increase in temperature.

By the time he starts to feel resentful and decides to get out of the pot, he will have relaxed so much that it will be impossible for him to do so, which will be fatal for him.

In the same way , man remains apathetic to the gradual but significant overheating of the environment with fatal results for him if he does not wake up and react before he reaches the point where the situation is irreversible, as happened in the example of the frog.

Routes from the Pezoula calves

After “Vratrachos Vrastos” you can head towards the village of Pezoula and then to the very beautiful village of Filakti. On your green route you will see on the right a stream which in some places forms very small waterfalls.

In addition, from Kalyvia Pezoula you can either follow the lakeside route that passes by the next large and beautiful village, Neochori, or ascend to the Agrafa mountain shelter, which you will find at a distance of 10 km and at an altitude of about 1’530 meters.

On your way you will pass by Neraida, a small but very picturesque village, while just above the shelter, at a distance of about 100 meters, you will find yourself in a clearing with a very nice view of the Lake Plastira (or the impressive morning fog that covers everything).

When we visited the shelter was unfortunately closed but from the outside and looking through the windows it seemed very organized and clean with large and comfortable spaces.

Two of the most touristic villages with several suggestions for your stay are the picturesque Neochori that enjoys the view of the lake and of course the Pezoula Calves with the Pezoulas beach.
