The wet element in the prefecture of Preveza is particularly intense as the presence of two important rivers, Louros and Acheron(accommodation proposals in Acheron), and the exceptional beauty of Lake Zirou, offer unique thrills to lucky visitors.

Luros River

The Louros River originates from Mount Tomaros in the prefecture of Ioannina and flows after a course of about 80 km into the Amvrakikos Gulf. Since ancient times it has been important for the water supply of nearby large urban centres such as Nikopolis, with a population of 300 thousand inhabitants.

For this purpose, in 31 BC, the Roman emperor Augustus Octavian ordered the construction of the huge aqueduct of Lourus, which was huge for the time. Large and impressive parts of it are located near the village of Agios Georgios, in a lush area crossed by the Louros.

If you visit the ancient Roman aqueduct, it is worthwhile to drive a little further north, after the villages of Nea Mousiotitsa and Vouliasta, on the right and visit the springs of Louros. It is a small round pond in which the green slopes of the hills around it are reflected. Its waters have a unique blue-green colour and their intense and rare clarity offers a unique spectacle worth seeing while taking the perimeter walk.

Acheron

The river Acherontas(accommodation in Acherontas) is also strongly associated with antiquity , not so much for practical reasons like Louros but for religious reasons.

According to the ancients, Charon carried the souls of the dead in his boat to Hades via the Acheron River. The gates to the underworld were located in the most important necromancy of antiquity, known since the time of Homer, the Necromancy of Acheron, which has resisted strongly over the centuries and is located near the village of Mesopotamos.

It should be mentioned at this point that the straits, the estuary and the wider area of the river belong to the European Network of Protected Areas Natura 2000.
