Access to the Kalavryta ski resort

…This is due to the relatively short distance of Kalavryta from Athens , which is 188 km (about 203 km from Athens to the ski resort).

From Patras , Kalavrita is only 88 km away while from Athens you will take the national road to Patras and 7-8 km after the beach of Akrata, you will see a sign for Diakoptos Junction. There you turn right, pass under the national road and in 32 km you have reached Kalavryta.

In several places the route offers pleasant surprises such as the river of Vouraikos which at times is right next to the road and the particularly impressive view of the monastery of the Great Cave.

Information

The ski resort of Kalavryta has been operating since 1988 and is located on the northwestern side of Chelmos (Aroania Mountains). The base of the ski resort, where you will find the chalet with the restaurant and cafeteria, the car parking, some ski schools and ski equipment, is at 1,700 meters altitude while the top reaches 2,350.

There are 7 lifts and 12 slopes with all levels of difficulty, making the Kalavryta ski resort ideal for both beginners and experienced skiers or snowboarders.

Sightseeing-Activities in Kalavryta

And after you finish descending the snowy slopes of Helmos you can visit Kalavryta, which is worth staying 1-2 days as there are many things to see and do. Here is a very short list of what you can do and see:

• Enjoy the monuments of natural beauty in the area of Kalavrytasuch as the Vouraikos Gorge, the Cave of Lakes in Klitoria or the Stygos Waters.
• Visit the impressive Monastery of Mega Cave which is built on the vertical majestic rock. In addition, see the monastery of Agia Lavra , where Paleon Patron Germanos raised the banner of the revolution on March 25, 1821.

• The museum of the Kalavritan holocaust by the German occupation troops in December 1943. In memory of those who were executed on Black Monday, December 13, 1943 by the Nazis. All the men of Kalavrita from the age of 14 and upwards were led to the Ridge of Kappi (today’s Place of Sacrifice) and saw their village burn to the ground just before they were killed by German bullets. In total, in the German operations of that December 1943, more than 20 villages in the area were burnt to the ground and 697 Greeks died in firing squads.

• Try some of the traditional delicacies such as sweets, honey and yoghurt in the shops of Kalavryta.
• Enjoy local fresh meat in the traditional taverns and have a coffee or a drink in one of the modern cafes or bars that are open all year round.
