Finikounda in Messinia

Finikounda Beach, Messinia

Also available in: Ελληνικά Italiano

Finikounda is a beautiful and quiet seaside resort of Messinia built just behind a long sandy beach with fine sand and clear waters. It is located at the southwestern tip of Messinia , about halfway along the route that connects the castle towns of Koroni and Methoni.

Name of the area and settlement

The name of Finikounda does not owe it to the Phoenicians as many think but to the Phoenician (red) color that was produced, from antiquity, after processing of the scarlet porphyra!* It is mentioned as limin te Phoenicians by the traveler Pausanias in the second century after Christ while the first name of the settlement used until 1930, when the official name was given, was Taverna Messinia!

During the day, holidaymakers spend peaceful moments enjoying their swim while on the beach you will find several tavernas, ouzerias and cafes for all tastes.

Fun in Finikounda

In the evening things do not change much as Finikounda is not a cosmopolitan resort but a destination for a relaxing holiday oriented towards the beautiful Messinian nature, the rich history of the place and the picturesque settlements that are waiting to be enjoyed along the coast of Messinia.

However, in the evening, apart from the tavernas and the creperie, you will find 2-3 bars with relatively good music.

In addition, there is a club and a very picturesque discotheque with the classic dance floor and an olive tree trunk that is like a small bar in the center, tables around the perimeter, olives on top and music from classic disco repertoire, and nice passages from reggae to some rock or even punk (we visited once in August 2009, yes yes yes it has been many years since then, if you have any news please let me know)

Sightseeing in Finikounda

Finikounda is the best place for a holiday away from stress, next to its beautiful sandy beach, its peaceful location and the beautiful and large beaches that are located just before and just after the settlement such as Mavrovouni, Loutsa, Lampes and several others.

In addition, the short distances will allow you to spend several hours admiring the picturesque coastal states of Coroni, the Methoni and Pylos with their ancient medieval castles, their picturesque alleys and little houses as well as the beaches you will find next to them.

Finally, you can also visit the impressive Polymnium 42 km away. It may take you most of the day but it’s probably worth it.

Access to Finikounda

Finikounda is 69 km from Kalamata and you have to take the road to Messini and Koroni. You will pass just outside Koroni to follow the relatively new Koroni-Methoni road. It would be advisable to avoid the shorter route in kilometres that starts from Nea Koroni as you will find difficult narrow roads with several bends that will eventually slow you down further.

If you are coming from Athens (distance Athens-Finnikounda 290 km), then you do not need to reach Kalamata but a few kilometers outside of it turn right towards Messini.

Alternatively if you want to see the beautiful states of Pylos and Methoni you can take the road from Messina to Pylos, if you have time you can also pass by the green Polylimnio with its ponds and waterfalls in the villages of Kazarma and Haravgi, take a break in Pylos or Methoni and continue to Finikounda. This route has a few more kilometres but is worth trying.

However, and don’t stop anywhere from the locations mentioned above, you can settle in Finikounda and go within the next few days since it is close enough and the route is easy. Specifically, the distance Methoni-Finikounda is 12 km, Pylos-Finikounda 21 km and Koroni-Finikounda 18 km
