Endowed with lush nature, running water all year round and easy access from the Chalkida, Steni Evia or Steni Dirfyos is an ideal solution for those who want a short getaway to an unexpectedly beautiful and affordable winter destination.
Access to Steni Evia
Steni Evia or Steni Dirfyos belongs to the municipality of Dirfya – Messapia and is kilometres away:
- Athens-Steni: 108 km
- Chalkida-Steni: 32 km

Starting from the Chalkida you will follow the signs for northern Evia. In Nea Artaki, you will see the sign for Steni and turn right and follow the road that leads to the heart of Central Evia. After a few kilometres, the landscape starts to become mountainous while the revelation of the two mountain ranges, Dirfys and Xirovouni, will “whet your appetite” for what is to follow.

The impressive mountain range of Dirfys dominates the landscape of Evia, it is the highest mountain of the island with an altitude of 1,743 meters and offers a unique view of the Aegean Sea and the green slopes of central Evia. Moreover, it is famous mountain for its significant snowfall as we have seen incredible images with one+ meter of snow inside the village of Steni. So this winter, keep up to date with the weather as Dirfi is not kidding.
You can download to your computer and the path file Chalkida to Steni Evia to see exactly the route you need to follow. It requires that you have the Google Earth application installed on your computer.

The village
Arriving in the village, the smell of the forest and the sound of running water easily win the first impressions while the view of the amphitheatrically built houses invites the visitor for the first exploratory walks through the uphill and well-maintained paths.

Steni is located at an altitude of 400 meters, on the edge of the highest mountain of Evia, Dirfys (1.743m). Its houses are built on the slopes of the mountain while on the left and opposite them, dominates the rock complex of Karaouli, which today challenges many adventurous climbers offering a relatively new climbing field.
The centre of the village is the paved square which you can reach by following the pedestrian street behind the main kiosk of the area.
From there and up to the square, you will find some young cafes, traditional cafes and of course some of the famous for their famous meat, taverns of the area. The good food is another reason why many gourmets prefer Steni, while the location of most of the grills, above the ravine and under the shade of the plane tree, definitely whets the appetite!

Sightseeing and activities in Steni Evia
During your stay in Steni you should not miss a walk to the most famous spring of the village, the “doctor’s fountain“, which is located about half a kilometer from the square and is “drowned” by plane trees and running waters that flow from everywhere.
Finally, the ascent by car to the highest point of the road, before it begins to descend towards the famous beach of Chiliado, will allow you to admire the exceptional forest of Dirfi, which is initially dominated by pine and plane trees, giving way, as the altitude rises, to chestnut, fir and oak trees.

Do not miss to see
- Weather permitting, visit the mountain shelter of Dirfys, at about 1100 meters, to enjoy the view to the top of the mountain, the imposing, conical-shaped Delphi.

- On weekends, in place of the “doctor’s tap” there is usually a bazaar with traditional products such as mountain tea, chestnuts and honey (in July there is a honey festival!).
- If you go in summer, it is worth a swim at the Aegean and in recent years quite popular beach of Chiliado, on the back side of Dirfi.
