Catch of the day, Castellorizo (Megisti)

I hope that with the photos from Kastellorizo, which I took a month after George Papandreou’s famous announcement about the country’s entry into a surveillance regime (IMF), and the information I am providing, you will get a first taste of the distant but beautiful paradise of the Aegean.

Access to Kastellorizo

Kastellorizo is connected by ferry and mainly by air with Rhodes. The cost of the ticket is quite low (if I remember correctly I paid about 35 euros) as it is subsidized as a flight to a border island. If you include the 54 euros (May 2010) for the plane from Athens to Rhodes, it comes to about 90 euros total. Not bad for the distance to the island.

Sightseeing in Kastellorizo

It is worth visiting either on foot or by taking the island’s only taxi, Paleokastro with the Cyclopean walls from the 3rd century BC and the church of St George of the mountain. Inside the church there is the underground catacomb of Agios Haralambos. Descend if you are with someone else as the passage is narrow and slippery due to the humidity.

Unique and beautiful Symi

The best known archaeological find on the island is the Lycian Tomb of the 4th century BC, which is located in the settlement going towards Mandraki from the path parallel to the sea, approximately at the point shown on the map below the photos.

Another beautiful spot to visit is the blue cave in the south eastern part of the island. It can only be accessed by a small low boat so your visit there depends almost entirely on the wind and the sea swell.
