Molyvos is one of the most beautiful traditional and preserved settlements not only of Lesvos but of the entire Aegean. Its well-preserved castle and its narrow uphill alleys with its mansion houses are just some of the features that captivate visitors.
The unique view from the Aegean Sea as you stand in front of the entrance of the castle, the picturesque little harbour at the edge of the settlement, the picturesque shops with their well decorated windows and the smells of the dishes offered by the taverns and ouzo restaurants come to complete the picture that you will keep forever with you once you leave Molyvos (or Mithymna as we will read below).
Access to Molyvos (Mithymna)
Molyvos is located in the northern and eastern part of Lesvos and is 59km from the capital of the island, Mytilene, on the route that crosses the island of Lesvos in the middle, passing through Kalloni and Petra. Alternatively you can take the more coastal route of 61km crossing the east coast of Lesvos as you pass through the villages of Thermi, Mantamados and Sikamnia.
Molyvos has been inhabited since ancient times since in the same place as today was the Ancient Mithymna from which unfortunately not many things have been preserved except of course the name which is used along with the name Molyvos but more as an official name that you will see more in government agencies and documents.
Sightseeing in Molyvos (Mithymna)
The Byzantine castle of the settlement as you will see in the photos dominates the hill that of course had been used for the fortification of the ancient city. Despite its privileged position, it could not resist the would-be conquerors such as the Catalans, the Turks and the Venetians. However, the view of the Aegean Sea is unique and it is worth climbing all the way to the end of the road to enjoy it.
The traditional houses and mansions as well as the cobbled narrow streets and cobbled alleys are some of the reasons why Molyvos was declared a listed settlement in 1965, thus preserving almost intact its traditional colour and “aroma”. The fountains, 25 public fountains built by the Ottomans to supply water to the settlement, contribute to this.
In addition, if you have time, do not miss the Argyris Efthaliotis Public Library, the Ottoman mosque and the churches of the settlement, the oldest being that of Taxiarches.
Near Molyvos (Mithymna)
Just 4.5 km from Molyvos is Eftalou with its famous pebbled long beach and its thermal baths. At the long beach of Agioi Anargyroi you will enjoy, apart from the unique view of the coast of Asia Minor, the large black or dark pebbles that give a special and wild tone to this and the other beaches of the north coast.
Swimming in its deep waters will be unforgettable as well as eating in some of the seaside tavernas overlooking the coast of Turkey. Don’t forget to bring shoes or flip-flops as well as a hat or beach umbrella as there is no shade and the dark pebbles on hot summer days are “dangerously” hot.
At a distance of now 5.5 km from Molyvos to the south you will find the beautiful seaside settlement of Petra with its characteristic elevated huge rock and its long beach.
